Life of Muslims In Germany - Study Trip Program 2017

Print

Indonesia is a country of particular diversity. On its more than 17,000 islands, people live with diverse skin colors, cultures, languages and religions. While the overwhelming majority of Indonesians attach to Islam, there are as well religious minorities who practice various forms of Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, or Confucianism. The diversity of the country finds its resonance in the Indonesian state motto "unity in diversity".

Like Indonesia, Germany has also become a land of diversity. Several immigration phases have contributed to the emergence of ethnic and religious plurality since the 1950s. Today about 5 percent or 4,100,000 citizens of the German population are Muslim. Cities such as Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg are home to representative mosque buildings and are cultural hubs for Muslim life and Islamic culture in Germany. However, contrary to Indonesia, Muslims in Germany are a religious minority in a widely secular environment.

The Goethe Institute Indonesia, which is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany that provides information about the culture and society of Germany, is planning a two-week educational trip to Germany in October 2017. The participants of the trip shall be given the opportunity to meet German Muslims and get a comprehensive picture of Islamic culture in Germany and about the implications of being part of a religious minority. The selection of the participants will be executed in partnership with Universitas Paramadina.
