Overview
As Australia and Indonesia work on deepening their economic engagement, Australia’s Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen will visit Jakarta, where he will speak about the opportunities he sees to develop economic ties, and more meaningful relations.
As Treasurer of Australia Mr Bowen would make closer economic ties with Indonesia a national priority. He believes the bilateral relationship should be more about both countries working together for the betterment of the region. He is also passionate about increasing Australia’s Asian literacy, and is undertaking a university degree to learn Bahasa Indonesia.
He looks forward to the day when an Australian politician speaking Indonesian is as unremarkable as an Indonesian lawmaker speaking English.

The Hon Chris Bowen MP We all know Chris well. He was Mayor of Fairfield as a young man in 1998 and 1999. Prior to being elected to Parliament he served as Carl Scully’s Chief-of-Staff.
He was elected to Federal Parliament as Member for Prospect in 2004 where he served the same electorate (now McMahon) ever since.
Chris rose quickly through the ranks from the Opposition backbench to Shadow Assistant Treasurer and the in Government under Gillard and Rudd, served in a number of Cabinet and Ministerial positions, most notably as Treasurer in 2013.
Ever since then Chris has been a member of Bill Shorten’s Leadership Group, serving as Shadow Treasurer, where he’s focused on important economic policy areas ranging from superannuation, infrastructure, housing affordability and cities, to taxation.
